Shylae case reveals cracks; system that aids in adoptions could lack in follow up

Every month for three years, child protective services visited Valerie Leslie's Flint home, met with her two foster children and helped with any issues.

Then Leslie adopted the two girls -- one of whom has several mental health issues -- and any help she was getting seemed to abruptly stop.

Three years after police found his 5-year-old daughter dead from liver failure and neglect inside a lice-infested Flint home, Jeffrey Kelley has been released from state prison.

 

Kelley, 37, father of the late Rose Kelley, was released on July 2 from the Florence Crane Correctional Facility in Coldwater. Kelley was placed on parole and ordered not to have contact with any children.

(04/16/09)--Children are now the latest casualties of the economy.

When Children Witness Abuse of Their Mothers

One Sunday afternoon in 2003, Ulner Lee Still, Susan's husband, forced their 13-year-old son to videotape him as he berated and beat his wife for 51 minutes. Susan says her oldest son operated the camera, while her 8-year-old son sat in the room, watching the abuse unfold.
